Feudalism was the "ladder of the social society" in the Middle Ages. The Kings and Queens were at the top, followed by the lords/nobles, then the knights, and last, the peasants. The vassals were the people who asked for help and protection from the people who were higher on the 'ladder" called lords and kings. The lords and kings would protect their vassals, consult with them and give them food, water and shelter in return for work. Feudalism was basically the type of government the Middle Ages people had. After the crusades, feudalism in the Middle Ages started to fall apart. When feudelism fell apart, nations formed, and there were less small kingdoms. Europe became more united.
